Mike Stemple Talks Training with Sanuk

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

“For the past 2 months that I have started training again I have had a nagging left knee injury and have done everything to fix it. TENS machine (transdermal electrical nerve stimuli), ice, warps, pain creams, etc.. Every time I go out for a run it starts to bother me. Today I went out for my daily 10 mile run and half way through my knee starts hurting on the outside and below the knee cap really bad. This was the final straw for me. Less than 80 days to me running 150 miles across the Sahara and my knee is killing me! So I kicked off my shoes at the 1/2 way point and ran home in my socks. Guess what…my knee stopped hurting! I ran perfectly. Decent stride, good mid-foot landing, no pain in the ankles or knees (bottoms of feet are a little bruised but had to run on asphalt so that explains it).
So this is what I think has happened. As I mentioned before when I am not in running shoes I am in Sanuks. After my last race in early April I took time off to heal my shoulder and only wore Sanuks the whole time in recovery. I think this strengthened my feet and placed them back in a more natural position. When I started training in my running shoes they are twisting my ankle and knee out of natural alignment causing the knee pain. How crazy is that? So I am going to spend more time training barefoot and in my SUV’s.
