It’s looking like the age old adage is holding true: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Little John “Jondor” Mel, the son of Santa Cruz big wave warrior Peter “The Condor” Mel, has been on quite the tear lately…

In Chile, a select crew of big wave surfers were invited to the Quiksilver Ceremonial Big Wave contest at Punta de Lobos. Sanuk’s big-wave chargers Peter Mel, Ramon Navarro and Shane Dorian were on hand to push the limits and conquer gargantuan Chilean water mountains. The purpose of the event was raise funds for local disaster relief efforts in wake of February’s devastating earthquake and tsunami. All riders pledged to donate 50% of their prize winnings to help the cause. The total prize purse of the event topped out at $30,000.
