The word Gnarly now spelled, “B-A-R-L-E-Y”

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Sanuk teamrider, Brett “Gnarly” Barley, has been paying dues in Hawaii this winter. As an East Coaster, Brett is no stranger to battling for supremacy away from home.

Sir Brettly” has been on a mission to prove himself in Hawaiian waters- most notably at the Banzai Pipeline, a place known for heavy surf, challenging conditions and make-or-break waves.

For a competitive surfer, sometimes being island-side isn’t always palm trees and mai tais… Okay- Well maybe it is, but trying to make a name for oneself amidst thick crowds, intimidating bruddahs, and great expectations doesn’t always prove as relaxing as a Hawaiian vacation might sound.

One sure fire way to enjoy one’s stay? Take the good with the bad and adopt a positive outlook. After all, how often does one get to surf the best waves in the world with only three guys out? Exactly.

Last year, Brett turned heads (and lenses) at the Volcom Pipe Pro as he took down big names advancing all the way to the semis. Labeled a “Dark Horse” and crowd favorite, Brett has started to carve out a niche for himself in the Aloha State. Here’s just one of 20 frames from a sequence featured on Surfline.com from Day One at this year’s contest.

Brah, it’s no secret the waves have been going off over there. Here’s some moving images Brett sent us starring the man himself and some amigos.

The day after, Pipe so graciously handed Brett’s eyebrow one hell of a beating…Yowza. With five stitches and a little bit of R&R, Brett was back on his board and back to charging.

No guts no glory, right?

Shayne’s Sanuks: Sleepy San Diego

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Welcome to Chapter 3 of Shayne’s Sanuks- a growing collection of photos taken by Sanuk surf shredder/traveler/full-time family man, Shayne McIntyre.

If you missed the first and second installments do check ‘em out (Look, we’ve even hi-lighted them for ya).

This time, Shayne shows us around his old stomping grounds- San Diego. More  specifically, the sleepy, sea-grass covered coves of La Jolla. As a mecca for surf culture, San Diego has seen it’s fair share of legends come, go and stick around. Here, Shayne gives us his unique take on what makes this area so special:

“This is an image of the Wind an’ Sea “Shack” in San Diego, taken at first light (I later caught a couple of those fun wedgy rights you see in the lineup).  This is where I grew up, learned to surf, and even made my first dollar when I was a kid fixing dings with Stecker right there at the shack.  The foundations of my appreciation for surfing and everything that goes with it started here.”

“Along with Family, Wind an’ Sea is what I miss most about San Diego now that I live in Puerto Rico – but I always find time when visiting to stop by and spend as much time there as I can.  One day I’ll move back.”

“This is image is facing South taken from under the shack.  The whole area is really beautiful and never really gets too crowded because there are no direct links to the freeways making it a hassle to make your way down here.  Some people also don’t like all the rocks or body-wamp…those are some of my favorite things.”

“The surfers of Windan’ Sea have made a huge impact on the culture & performance of surfing today that can’t be underestimated: Bob Simmons – breaking away from the single fin into twin fin planing hulls revolutionizing surfboard design forever. Style pioneer,Phil Edwards, who was the first person to drop in at Pipeline among other things.

Mike Hynson, Skip Frye, Butch Van Artsdalen… even Miki Dora got in to the Windan’ Sea Surf Club due to it’s prestige even though he lived in LA. Tom Lochefeldt did his best to keep surfers out of Windan’Sea and invented the “WaveLoch” standing wave which has people riding waves from Abu Dhabi to the decks of Cruise ships today. Other noteworthy surfers include Bill Caster, Chris O’Rourke, Peter King, Richard Kenvin, Tim Bessell, Jon Roseman, Saxon Boucher, & Derek Dunfee, not a complete list by a mile…”

“This little fun right is called Turtles and runs off a rock to the North of Windan’Sea’s main break right into the inside left meeting right on the sand.  It’s a fun wave on it’s day and gives some crowd relief for the groms on busy days.”

Where in the world will Shayne go next?

Sanuk Introduces New Photo Series: Shayne’s Sanuks

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

While most known for his travel-inspired show, On Surfari, Shayne McIntyre, is a man of many talents. More dashing than George Clooney and armed with a proper cutback (a surfing term, NOT a sexual innuendo), Shayne travels the world with his family in search of surf, adventure and smiles.

So what does a traveling family bring on their many journeys around the globe? Let’s see… surfboards, gear, wax, trunks, supplies, entertainment for the kids, cameras, and of course- Sanuks- the ultimate travel companions.

This is where Shayne’s idea enters the frame (Pun definitely intended).

Shayne came to the our Creative Team with a novel vision- one through which he could share the sights he and his Sanuks see from the far reaches of the globe. Without further ado, allow us to introduce a new project near and dear to our soles called, Shayne’s Sanuks.

Chapter 1 comes to you from the McyIntyre’s current stomping grounds: Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

To catch Shayne and his family in the act, brush up on his show, On Surfari, which currently airs on Fuel TV.

Shayne will also be appearing in an upcoming, side-splitting episode of SANUK NEWS!

Sanuk’s Chris Tucker Doesn’t Stink at ESA Easterns …Sort of.

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

At the most recent stop on the ESA Surfing Tour, Sanuk’s Chris Tucker bagged a BIG 1st place finish in Open Mens Division and 2nd in Junior Mens Division. Tucker was hungry to stake his claim atop the podium.

According to posting on Transworld Surf, Chris stayed focused with a barrage of “vigorous, dynamic slashes, tailblows, and air reverses in the diminishing knee-to-waist-high peaks” – Skeptical. Ha. Just take a gander at the visuals.

Chris’s motto for the contest- if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. From the pre-heat rituals to the stretches on the beach, Chris stuck to a routine that worked like magic. He even wore the same shirt and boardshorts everyday of the event…

Chris on going for the grunge: “They’re starting to stink pretty bad, but it’s working so I’ve just stayed with it.” Congrats, Chris! Job well done. Now that the events over, you might want to find the nearest laundromat.

The ESA stop saw a dominance Sanuk teamriders on all fronts. Sanuk wondergrom, Stevie Pittman, took 2nd place in the Menehune Division. Alex Fawess snagged a 2nd in Men’s Longboard.

What are we feeding these shredders, you ask? Gummy worm. Lots and lots of gummy worms.
